Product Design | Manufactum Germany
In 2016, I began supplying two handmade kitchen essentials to Manufactum in Germany—a potholder and a sisal kitchen scrub. Both were designed to reflect the values of quality, function, and sustainability. Produced through home-based job creation projects in South Africa, these products continue to be part of Manufactum’s range today, demonstrating the long-term potential of well-designed, ethically made goods in international markets.

Manufactum’s high standards and commitment to timeless, functional products made them an ideal partner for SpaZa. I saw an opportunity to meet their need for honest, durable household items with designs that could be handmade at scale. The challenge was to align with their exacting supplier requirements while showcasing the integrity and practicality of South African craftsmanship.

Both products were developed with simplicity, function, and ethical production in mind. I worked directly with home-based makers to prototype and refine the designs—ensuring each could be made consistently, meet strict quality standards, and use renewable, biodegradable materials. Every detail, from stitch tension to fibre source, was considered with the end user—and the retailer’s expectations—in mind.training and equipment to ensure consistent, high-quality production.
We also created opportunities for emerging South African artists. Twice a year, we host a design pitch process where young creatives submit themed print concepts. Selected artists receive mentorship, income, and visibility—helping them grow their careers while seeing their work used in meaningful, practical ways.

Supplying to Manufactum has proven the scalability of our small-batch production model. These products have been reordered year after year, building a loyal following while providing reliable income to our makers. It’s a quiet but powerful success story: thoughtful design, meaningful employment, and long-term retail partnerships that honour both ethics and excellence.
