Halo Dish Covers

Halo Dish Covers is a purpose-driven brand I created to meet growing wholesale demand for our bestselling fabric dish covers. Designed to replace single-use plastics in the kitchen, these covers are as functional as they are beautiful. The brand has grown to supply major retail chains like Woolworths South Africa, earned Fair Trade Verification, and was featured on QVC. Halo continues to champion sustainable design while generating meaningful opportunities for young people and creatives in South Africa.

Brand Strategy

Opportunity

South Africa’s household market was dominated by single-use plastic and low-quality synthetic products. Retailers and consumers were actively seeking alternatives. I saw the opportunity to develop a commercial brand rooted in sustainable values—one that would meet this growing demand from retailers, empower young South Africans, and serve as a model for conscious business.

Product Development

Our design ethos centred on flexibility, durability, and daily usefulness. The covers are machine washable, designed to fit a variety of bowls and dishes, and made from natural materials. They quickly became a kitchen essential and a popular gift item.

To meet demand, we partnered with local manufacturers and cooperatives—facilities that had the skill and infrastructure, but not enough work. We supported them with training and equipment to ensure consistent, high-quality production.

We also created opportunities for emerging South African artists. Twice a year, we host a design pitch process where young creatives submit themed print concepts. Selected artists receive mentorship, income, and visibility—helping them grow their careers while seeing their work used in meaningful, practical ways.

Impact and Outcomes

Halo Dish Covers has become a widely recognised brand, stocked by mid-sized chains and featured on international platforms like QVC. The initiative supports job creation for youth, expands income opportunities for South African manufacturers, and brings fresh creative talent into the spotlight.

Each design not only reduces plastic waste but also carries a human story—of craftsmanship, artistry, and social purpose.
